Science
Over the year these are our Units of Study.
Observing Weather & Seasons throughout the year - This unit is a yearlong theme in the grade 1 classroom. Teachers provide students with authentic opportunities to get outdoors to observe seasonal changes, weather patterns, cloud color and type, temperature fluctuation and wind throughout the academic year.
Air & Weather – This unit is composed of 20 lessons. The students will focus on the following questions: What is air? What is wind?
Throughout the lessons students will :
*learn air’s observable properties: invisible, takes up space, has weight, has strength, is a fluid – flows and moves, can change direction
*learn that air is a mixture of gases – including oxygen
*learn that air holds things (Water vapor, pollen, dust & pollutants)
*learn the force of air pressure pushing on objects and materials
*observe and compare how moving air interacts with objects. (Parachutes, kites, bubbles, pinwheels, etc)
*learn that wind is moving air - wind speed & direction can be measured
*become familiar with instruments used by meteorologists to monitor air and weather conditions
*make connections between air and weather conditions
Life Cycles – The Life Cycle Unit is comprised of several integrated mini-units on specific topics within the big idea of life cycle.
The students will recognize that animals (including humans) and plants are living things that grow, reproduce, and need food, air, and water.
