Writing Workshop
Over the year first graders will learn the following 7 Units of Study. We will be following the Lucy Calkins Units of study.
·Launching – At the beginning of the year we start the year with this unit. Students creating large hearts with ideas /events that are near and dear to them. Students will also learn how to care for materials, and understanding the purpose of writing. We also focus on writing simple sentences and that all sentences have a capital and a period. Students will write many journal entries to practice these skills.
· How To – Students will learn how to explain something so that someone can do it? How do I document what I observe? They will learn to: create a supply of materials, use transitional words, label illustrations, write an introduction and write a conclusion.
· Personal Narrative – Students will learn "What makes a small moment? " "How do I write a small moment from my life?" They will learn they have many big ideas (pumpkin ideas) and within that idea there are many small moments (seeds) that they can write about and describe. They will set the scene and show not tell about their event.
· Informational: All-About Writing – Students will learn "How do you write a book about one non-fiction topic?" Students will learn to read and collect information and then write about that topic.
· Persuasive Writing – Students will l;earn "How do I convince someone to see my point of view?"
"What s an opinion?" "How can my supportive argument of a claim persuade thinkers?" The students will learn how to use another graphic organizer to plan their topic.
· Letter Writing – Students will learn "How do you write a friendly letter?" They will how to write a friendly letter and the format of a friendly letter.
· Poetry – Students will learn "How is a poem different from individual sentences?" "How does a poet use poetic language?" They will use pictures from nature to write poems. They will use strong adjectives and verbs to describe their topics.
